Two Autopsy Cases of Cytomegalic Inclusion Disease

Abstract
Two cases of cytomegalic inclusion disease observed from autopsy are reported as its rare disease in this country.
The first case was 23-day-old male infant who had complained of jaundice from 2 days ago without fever.
It was found that he had yellowish discoloration of the skin, icteric sclera, anemic conjunctiva, and palpable liver and spleen. But he was dead in six hours of admission in spite of treatment without studying of the routine laboratory tests except blood culture, which revealed no growth during 48 hours. The gross findings at autopsy performed 44 hours after expire were yellowish skin discoloration, severe dehydration, subarachnoid hemorrhage in brain, small multiple subcapsular petechiae in thymus and bilateral cortical hemorrhagic spots of the both kidney. The liver showed dark greenish black, but the surface was smooth.
The microscopic observation showed characteristic inclusion-bearing giant cells in the pituitary gland, thyroid, liver, kidney, lungs, pancreas, and adrenal glands.
The second case was 76-day-old male patient complained of jaundice, acholic stool since birth and respiratory distress with cyanotic attacks. He expired with respiratory distress accompanying frequent cyanotic attacks. The gross findings of the autopsy were not significant, and then microscopic feature showed that the cytomegalovirus infection involved the lung without other visceral involvement.
A brief review of the literature was also made.
